History, Ethos and Spirit of the Corps

What the National Cadet Corps stands for, what it expects of a cadet and the songs that have carried its spirit since Independence.

History of the NCC

The National Cadet Corps traces its roots to the University Corps raised during the First World War, later reorganised into the University Training Corps and then the University Officers’ Training Corps in the years before Independence. The National Cadet Corps in its present form was established by the NCC Act of 1948, bringing together the Army, Navy and Air Force wings under a single tri-services youth organisation.

Why join NCC as an Aspirant?

As a competitive exam aspirant targeting JEE, NEET, KCET or other national-level exams, every hour of your day is budgeted. You might be wondering, “Why should I invest time in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) when I need to study?”

Most students in their 11th and 12th standards spend almost all of their time in non-physical activities, either glued to a desk studying for hours or staring at screens for mock tests. This sedentary lifestyle leads to physical fatigue, mental lethargy and high stress. The perfect antidote would be the NCC activities. NCC drills and outdoor activities break this unhealthy cycle. Regular physical movement increases blood flow to the brain, naturally boosting your memory retention, energy levels and concentration when you return to your books.

Competitive exams are a mental marathon. The rigorous training in the NCC instills an ironclad discipline that classroom coaching simply cannot teach. It trains you to stay calm, analytical, and focused under intense pressure the exact mindset you need when facing a difficult question paper.

Long after exam day passes, the leadership, communication, and decision-making skills you develop in the NCC will set you apart. Whether you are leading a project at as engineer, managing a high-stress emergency room as a doctor or heading a tech startup, the confidence you gain in the NCC stays with you for life.

The most successful aspirants aren't those who study 18 hours a day blindly, they are the ones who manage their time flawlessly. Balancing NCC with your preparation forces you to optimize your daily schedule, ruthlessly cut out distractions and study with maximum efficiency.

What an Ideal Cadet Looks Like

An NCC cadet is expected to carry the Corps’ motto — Unity and Discipline — into every part of daily life, not just on the parade ground. The ideal cadet is recognized not merely by achievements or medals but by integrity, responsibility and a commitment to serving the nation. Every action, whether in uniform or outside it, should reflect the values and traditions of the National Cadet Corps.

Discipline

Punctual and Precise

An ideal cadet values time, follows instructions without hesitation and reports for every activity in the correct uniform. Discipline is demonstrated through consistency, self-control and respect for rules.

Character

Honest Under Pressure

A cadet is truthful, accountable and dependable. They accept responsibility for their actions, learn from mistakes and uphold ethical values even in difficult situations.

Service

Puts the Unit First

Service before self is a defining quality of an NCC cadet. Whether participating in social service, disaster relief, environmental campaigns or unit activities, an ideal cadet contributes willingly and works for the greater good.

Fitness

Physically Prepared

A cadet maintains good physical fitness through regular exercise and healthy habits. Strength, endurance and resilience enable them to perform effectively during drills, camps, trekking and adventure activities.

Leadership

Leads From the Front

Leadership is demonstrated through initiative, confidence and teamwork. An ideal cadet motivates others by example, remains calm under pressure and takes responsibility when the situation demands it.

Loyalty

Committed to the Corps

An NCC cadet takes pride in the organization and represents it with dignity both on and off campus. Loyalty to the Corps, respect for seniors and peers and dedication to the nation's values are qualities that define an exemplary cadet.

The NCC Song

The NCC anthem is sung at the close of every parade and camp assembly, a reminder to cadets of the values they train under.

Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain, Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain

Apni Manzil Ek Hai,
Ha, Ha, Ha, Ek Hai,
Ho, Ho, Ho, Ek Hai.
Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain.

Kashmir Ki Dharti Rani Hai,
Sartaj Himalaya Hai,
Saadiyon Se Humne Isko Apne Khoon Se Pala Hai
Desh Ki Raksha Ki Khatir Hum Shamshir Utha Lenge,
Hum Shamshir Utha Lenge.

Bikhre Bikhre Taare Hain Hum Lekin Jhilmil Ek Hai,
Ha, Ha, Ha, Ek Hai
Hum Sab Bharatiya Hai.
Mandir Gurudwaare Bhi Hain Yahan
Aur Masjid Bhi Hai Yahan
Girija Ka Hai Ghariyaal Kahin
Mullah ki Kahin Hai Ajaan
Ek Hee Apna Ram Hain, Ek hi Allah Taala Hai,
Ek Hee Allah Taala Hain, Raang Birange Deepak Hain Hum,
lekin Jagmag Ek Hai, Ha Ha Ha Ek Hai, Ho Ho Ho Ek Hai.

Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain, Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain.
